This travel piece is actually a retail odyssey that strikes a universal chord, yet, paradoxically, it also offers a specific cultural insight by illustrating why Americans feel the need to own guns. Shop assistants are the same everywhere but some countries have better consumer protection laws, although you might not believe that if you spent a year taking an “electricity retailer” - the company that collects the money for the electricity you use in Victoria – to the ombudsman.
