THE UPROOTING

The Group - Issue #4

The Uprooting is an interactive photo-essay about forced displacement in Colombia, a humanitarian crisis that is arguably the most chronic and least visible in the Americas. Combining still photographs with ambient sounds, music, audio testimonies and interviews, The Uprooting attempts to give voice to ‘the displaced’, and context to their situation. The work is equally an essay in visual communication on the net, an attempt to relate a complex story in a meaningful and engaging way in the face of information overload, and in a way that responds to the unique interactivity of the Internet to curate a conversation about an issue, rather than simply tell another story.

A history of The Group

The Group started up in June 2009 when Larry Buttrose approached several other Australian writers with the idea. The concept he proposed to James Bradley, John Birmingham, Billy Marshall Stoneking and Mark Mordue was an online literary arts publication which would publish only links and short introductions,instead of full stories. Thus the magazine could be compact on the page, yet extend off as far in all directions as the web allowed. The concept was that the magazine - which would also include photographs and video - would be viewable by all at a freely accessible site, yet membership (and the ability to submit material for publication) be restricted to people who joined The Group on Facebook. This would allow the magazine and its contributors to evolve a distinct identity, while its content was still available free to all online. The other writers agreed, and the editorial group was formed.Larry Buttrose edited the first two issues, GROUP 1 and GROUP 2 in July and September 2009,and Billy Marshall Stoneking edited GROUP 3 in November 2009. Mark Mordue's travel edition GROUP 4 was published in February 2009. Adair Jones joined the editorial group in mid 2010 and edited GROUP 5, the literature issue, in July 2010.
