Life in the city is more fun when you pay attention to the graffiti and street art. It cheers the anarchist soul to find evidence that people will go out of their way to do something that is not allowed, when there is nothing in it for them.
There is tagging, and writing pieces, that many people find ugly and confounding, even scary. There are also finely honed artisan skills, developed and passed on outside of art schools - a miracle of modern culture.
And there is play, and adventure, and much interest in plotting and documenting street art in the city.
Places in the city become defined by the traces that people have left. Some street art celebrates places by commenting on what is there, or what was there recently.
